The Digital Maturity Model for Manufacturers: Where Does Your Company Stand?
Most manufacturers overestimate their digital maturity. This five-level model shows where you really are — and what the next level unlocks.
Most manufacturers we meet describe themselves as "fairly digital." They have a website, they use WhatsApp with customers, someone posts on Instagram. Then we run the assessment, and the picture changes.
The five levels
Level 1 — Paper & Phone. Orders arrive by phone and fax. Product knowledge lives in the heads of two long-serving employees. The price list is a printed booklet with handwritten corrections.
Level 2 — Digital Documents. Excel price lists, PDF catalogs, email orders. Digital in format, manual in practice: every order is still re-typed, every update still emailed to everyone.
Level 3 — Digital Presence. A real website, product photos, maybe a marketplace listing. The shop window is digital — but the shop behind it still runs on paper. This is where most exporters sit, and where most get stuck.
Level 4 — Digital Operations. Systems talk to each other. The website shows live stock from the ERP. Dealers order through a portal. Product data has one source of truth. Errors drop, speed doubles.
Level 5 — Digital Business. Data drives decisions. Automation handles the repetitive work. New channels launch in weeks because content, data and systems are ready. Digital isn't a department — it's how the company operates.
Why the jump from 3 to 4 matters most
Levels 1→3 improve how you look. Levels 3→5 improve how you earn. The portal that takes orders at midnight, the ERP sync that kills re-typing, the data foundation that makes every future launch cheaper — that's where transformation stops being a marketing expense and becomes an operations investment with measurable ROI.
