GEO: How to Become the Answer AI Gives Your Buyers

Buyers now ask ChatGPT for supplier recommendations. Generative Engine Optimization decides whether your company is in the answer.

GEO: How to Become the Answer AI Gives Your Buyers

A procurement manager types: "reliable manufacturers of leather handbags in Turkey for private label." The AI answers with three company names and a summary of each.

Were you one of them? That's what GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — determines.

How generative engines choose who to cite

AI assistants don't rank pages; they synthesize answers from sources they can parse and trust. They favor:

  • Consistent entities. Your company name, description, locations and specialties matching across your site, directories, LinkedIn and trade platforms.
  • Structured data. Schema.org markup that machine-readably states what you make, where you ship, and what certifications you hold.
  • Citable content. Specific, factual statements — capacities, materials, certifications, minimums — rather than adjectives. "8,000 units/month, BSCI-audited, MOQ 300" is quotable. "High quality and customer focused" is not.
  • Third-party corroboration. Trade directories, industry press and export databases confirming your claims.

GEO and SEO are complements, not competitors

Everything above also strengthens classic SEO. The difference is emphasis: SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links; GEO optimizes for being quoted in the answer itself. As more B2B research starts in chat interfaces, the second channel compounds.

Where to start

Ask three AI assistants what they know about your company and your category. The gaps you find — wrong facts, missing entirely, competitors cited instead — are your GEO roadmap.
